DIY Face Scrub: Honey & Coconut

This is another bath and body care product for those of you with combination, sensitive skin. I don’t know about you, but the winter especially – wreaks havoc on my skin…

I have oily areas, I have dry spots, which turn rough and scratchy if I don’t tend to my skin properly. Which never used to be a problem. One of the few exterior blessings that I have been graced with used to be easy to care for skin.

If one considers not being able to use conventional ‘beauty’ products. I’ve never had a big face-care regimen and it seemed to work for me. I’ve never had a problem with acne as a teen and have always been complimented on the pale luminescence of my skin. I used simple perfume and paraben free soaps and light moisturizers, as I discovered early on that those fancy (expensive) products we’rent my friend.

Rashes and and tight irritated skin would ensue and I could be guaranteed with the appearance of a break-out.

So I’ve always kept it simple and natural and it seemed to work.

Until I had babies.

Huge body and skin changes. The skin on my face never used to be all that affected by the elements, or the changing of seasons. Now…it is. Aging probably also has something to do with this and my skin seemed to be communicating to me. Pamper me! Tend to me!

Something that I’ve been getting into is weekly exfoliation of the body and face. For a natural DIY body scrub, click here.

I picked up a couple of different products from the Body Shop and while I am still an ardent lover of the gentle, light and cooling moisturizing qualities of their aloe face cream – none of the face-scrubs seemed to quality for the the justification of such an expense.

I then began to do some research. As someone who has more than dabbled in the use of herbal plants as medicine for the body and then went on to make and sell a healing and moisturizing salve for some time…I wasn’t venturing into unchareted territory.

It’s not all that complicated, really – especially this face-scrub. All you need are 5 ingredients and one of them is water!

 What You’ll Need:

  • 3/4 a cup of baking soda
  • 3/4 cup of baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons of melted coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons of organic honey
  • warm water as necessary while blending

How You Do:

Step 1: Have all of your ingredients of the ready. I used a medium sized clay pot with a spout to mix my ingredients together in. Makes for easy pouring into a jug for blending. Measure out the baking powder and soda and add both into the pot. Melt the coconut oil and add in.

Reasonable Questions You Might Ask: (and the answers)

Why baking powder?

Why baking soda?

Why honey?

Coconut oil on my face? You crazy? Yes, but not in this case. Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial, antifungal, moisturizing. It’s pretty much my miracle go-to  body and cooking product. Learn more here.

Step 2: Add in the honey and enough warm water to make a paste as you mix together. I just used the same tablespoon.

Step 3: Scrape out the paste into a slim unit appropriate for mess-free blending, I chose a juice jug. Add more water and bled until the paste is a think and creamy liquid, rather than a paste. As the coconut oil cools and this sits in your jar over time it will harden up some. The addition of more water will keep your scrub easy to apply.

Step 5: Pour into your storage jar of choice, I chose a medium sized Bell jar shortie with a plastic lid. (No rusting.)

Now…you can try it out. I’m going to tell you straight up, when you apply this to your skin, it feels heavenly. Ever so slightly cooling, thick and luxurious. It’s not until you start gently rubbing it around in a circular motion that it is actually an exfoliant. I immediately noticed that the scrub felt much more refined and gentle than any other one I had tried before, yet sturdy – if that makes any sense.

I’ve been using it once or twice a week now for a month and my skin stays moisturized, smooth and the dry rough patches are gone. Blackheads have minimized and I look forward to using it every time. Simple pleasures. Also? aside from actually sharing what my face looks like with this wonderful (goop…must not say goop) scrub all over it, there I am below – make-up free, which is how I look half of the time. Void of my daily routine of mineral  cover-up/all-in-one face powder, tinted lip-balm and cheek stain and mascara.

before-after Try it out for yourself. You’ll probably love it as much as I do. I would love to hear about your experiences, so come back and tell me about them in the comments!
